The performances in Stand by Me, on the other hand, are clearly not mostly created in the editing room. In many films with kids as the central character, scenes are cobbled together from quick close-ups achieved by the director painstakingly feeding the young actor his or her lines until the right take is captured. Reiner chose to cast boys who closely mirrored the personalities of the characters they were portraying, then worked with them carefully to create a true ensemble that could feed off each other's energy and quirks and make us believe these boys really knew each other for most of their young lives. What makes it work is the immense appeal of four young actors perfect for their roles and delivering remarkable performances. The movie doesn't shrink from that sensibility, which may partly explain why it played so well in a decade given to looking back in a haze to a "simpler" time that probably never really existed. Without Reiner's sensitive handling of the material, Stand by Me could be just a fantasy for those who actually believe, as the protagonist of King's original story states, that they had their best friends and best times just on the cusp of adolescence. Because of this connection, Reiner turned out a film that struck the same chords in men of his own age, creating an immediate box office hit and an instant classic that many still look back on with great tenderness and bittersweet fondness. Reiner was attracted to Stephen King's "The Body" because he was also about that age in 1959, dealing with many of the same issues of acceptance and finding his way in an adult world he was sure didn't appreciate him. Much of the dialogue has far more of the writer's hand than the kid's tongue, and that may be precisely right for a movie adapted from a semi-autobiographical story framed as the memory of a famous writer looking back on the most special summer of his youth. ![]() With their perceptive sensitivity about their own problems and those of their friends and their tendency to have heart-to-heart confessional conversations couched in psychological insights, they reflect more of the idea of what an adult might reveal about his early days with the benefit of hindsight. Bathed in a nostalgic glow of period pop music, burnished summer days, and conversations about Superman, the cartoon character Goofy, and the size of Annette Funicello's breasts, the movie appealed instead primarily to men in their mid-30s and up, who had experienced-or imagined they had-the lives that director Rob Reiner and his cast portrayed.ĭespite the production's every effort to capture certain slang expressions and pop culture references (and they are abundant and generally exact), the boys in this story really don't always talk like 12 year olds. For another, the story, set in 1959, was not about youth of the 1980s. For one thing, the salty language used by the boys in the picture, although very characteristic of their age group, got the movie slapped with an R rating. Evans based on the novella "The Body" by Stephen KingĬast: Wil Wheaton (Gordie Lachance), River Phoenix (Chris Chambers), Corey Feldman (Teddy Duchamp), Jerry O'Connell (Vern Tessio), Kiefer Sutherland (Ace Merrill), Richard Dreyfuss (Narrator/The Writer)Īlthough it was a film about 12-year-old boys on an adventure, it's unlikely that Stand by Me attracted many fans from that age bracket, the demographic that made hits out of other kid-oriented pictures of the time, like The Goonies and Explorers (both 1985). The two-day trek turns into a journey of personal discovery as they confront their fears, their family problems, and the everlasting bond of friendship between them. A writer recalls his youth in the summer of 1959, when he and three of his 12-year-old buddies took off on an adventure to find the body of a boy who died in the woods near their Oregon town. ![]() ![]() The significance of the serial numbers is unknown today, then the old Framus brand archive is lost since the middle of the 70s. Let it fully dry off.ģ – Paint your pic with your DIY Patina Paint. Isopropyl Alcohol or turpentine will usually do the trick, or sugar soap (TCP) on more delicate surfaces. Step 2 – Clean you project thoroughly using an appropriate cleaner for your surface. With this technique, it’s not so bad if the surface is a bit rough, because the paint will cover it, and the patina process always adds a lot of texture anyway. It’s just to give the medium something to grab onto. ![]() Step 1 – Lightly scuff up the surface using sandpaper or a sanding pad. This was so that if I missed any spots when painting it, or if some of the patina gets knocked off somehow, I won’t be left with a glaring white patch. I used fleur-de-lys mouldings in the brown colour (which is a pigment added when I mix the resin) to demonstrate these processes. Make sure you dry the last coat properly, and stir the paint very well between coats as the metal powder may have sunk to the bottom.Ī with any paint project, you’ll need to prepare your surface well. It’s also not a huge problem if your paint is a bit runny – you’ll just have to add more coats until the project is well covered. Cracks will just add texture to the final patina. The first coat probably won’t cover well, so you’ll need a second coat anyway. ![]() It’s not the end of the world if it cracks. Mine was about the consistency of double cream. The consistency of the paint should be fairly fairly thick, but not tick enough that it cracks on the project when it has dried. And voila! You have just made your own DIY Patina Paint! Pretty easy, huh? Step 3 – Mix the powder and medium together well. PVA is quite thick and sticky, so you will probably need to water it down a little. The ratio needed will depend on the binder you use. ![]() Step 2 – Measure your binding medium into a cup. If in doubt, mix a small amount to begin with – you can easily mix more. Some chemicals can accelerate the oxidation alongside other chemicals. Patination and rusting are, at it’s simplest, the result of oxidation of the metal. Never, ever mix ammonia and bleach, vinegar and bleach, or Isopropyl (or Rubbing) Alcohol and bleach. Never mix chemicals unless you know what you are doing. In addition, make sure you handle the chemicals used to patina the metals in a very well ventilated space, and wear skin, lung and eye protection at all time. Metal Powders should not be inhaled or ingested, so please make sure you wear appropriate PPE. I decided to use four metals that are most commonly used when fabricating household decor: Bronze, Iron, Copper and Brass. For the sake of this blog, though, I thought it would be more fun – and accessible – to explore what household chemicals can do to create patinas. My research proved that there are so many different ways to produce sometimes surprising colours. Not to say I have delved into this widely as yet. It’s fascinating how you can achieve different colours using different chemicals. Chemistry truly is one of nature’s decorators. I love seeing a plain, boring, dull bit of metal transform into something beautiful. I’ve been experimenting with how to patina using DIY patina paint and household chemicals, and I have to say, it’s absolutely fascinating – and fun! ![]() ![]() A Technical Note for LS1 and LS3 is under construction. We offer this solution to all pilots and sailplanes of the series DG-100, DG-200, DG-300, DG-400 and DG-600 as well as LS4 to LS8 which do not have a Roeger hook as a retrofittable substitute. For that we need a strength of about 8 KG according to the experiements of Prof. The hook itself can only be retrofitted at considerable expense, but a small spring loaded pin can accomplish the same purpose by fixing the canopy in the rear position until the slipstream lifts the front of the canopy over the pilot. We have decided to find a solution to this problem which could be retrofitted to older sailplanes and perform the function of a Roeger hook. Analysis of his head wounds showed that he had been knocked unconscious by the left side of the canopy frame. ![]() In the spring of 99 a pilot in the US died after a mid-air and pulling the canopy emergency release, but remained seated in the cockpit without even undoing his seat harness. Great, problem solved.īut there are still several thousand older sailplanes without a Roeger hook. Such a Roeger hook has been a mandatory installation in all new sailplanes for some years. The airstreams flowing into the cockpit cannot escape and therefore lifts the canopy, which rotates on the Roeger hook and forces the front of the canopy to lift off and depart rearwards over the tail fin. After the emergency release the hook turns on the rear canopy frame and prevents it from moving back. Roeger of the Aachen University of Applied Sciences many years ago invented a special hook, since named for him. Even worse, the departing canopy can hit the pilot on the head and causes him to lose consciousness. Sometimes the canopy moves back a bit in an emergency ejection and then gets pushed down in the airstreams to such an extent that the pilot has great difficulty to shove it out of the way. ![]() But there are two known situations when that is not possible. We have reported extensively on the NOAH system, but just like a rocket assist, it presumes that the canopy has first been ejected. But in an emergency the parachute is only useful if the pilot can leave the cockpit of a probably uncontrollable sailplane. ![]() Naturally, we do not expect to ever use them, but we don’t want to take unnecessary risks. Almost all sailplane pilots wear parachutes when flying. ![]() ![]() ![]() captive-bred animals are readily available.
